What Drives Your Insurance Agency Owner Nuts: Problems Not Solutions

This week we’re digging into an issue that can be transformative for your agency life and culture: what drives your insurance agency owner nuts. It’s important to know what might grind their gears, because oftentimes, owners might keep their frustrations to themselves. This next thing that can tick off agency owners: offering problems and not accepting solutions.

“The idea is every solution deserves a chance to solve the problem. Now, solutions often have to be iterated on, changed and updated and that’s okay. But here’s the thing: you can’t just vent and stomp your feet without going to the place of trying to solve it.”

Here’s the scenario: all we do is talk about a problem, and an agency owner comes up with a solution, but it’s not the solution that we want. It’s similar to when our friends won’t let their husbands do the chores because it’s not done the way that they would want. Here’s why it’s frustrating when employees don’t accept solutions.

Every solution deserves a chance

If a solution is offered to a problem and you reject it, the truth is that now you can’t complain about the problem anymore. Instead, you should try to embrace the idea that every solution deserves a chance to solve the problem. Now, solutions often have to be changed and updated, and that’s okay, but you should still give them a chance.

We need to take ownership over our piece of the puzzle

Everyone in an agency is part of the puzzle, and everyone needs to take ownership over what they’re contributing to the situation. When someone suggests a solution that isn’t well-received, you should work to unify people and come up with a solution. Just because you’re standing back doesn’t mean you’re an innocent actor.

Maybe we simply need to build a bridge

If something happens today that we need to solve, it’s possible that we need an immediate solution to build a bridge and get over the issue right now. This can help things in the long term, because instead of letting the issue fester, we’re solving it right now.

When something is going on, you should be open to different solutions, and we shouldn’t sell them short until we try them. If we do that, we’re really just passing judgement, and if you’re wondering what drives your insurance owner nuts, that can certainly be a big thing.
