What Upsets Your Insurance Manager – The Word Busy

Posted on August 16, 2021 by Alex Arellano

What Upsets Your Insurance Manager

Last week we covered things that tick off your insurance team, and this week, we’re flipping the script and diving into what upsets your insurance manager. Really, this covers all leadership, whether that person is an owner or holds another position. The first thing that really upsets your insurance manager? The word busy.

“Busy is a four-letter word that is literally to me, a grievance on the day. It is not a plan, it is not productive, it is not helpful.”

Why is busy such a frustrating word for leaders to hear? Let’s discuss exactly why, and what you can do instead of telling your manager or owner that you’re “too busy.”

Busy is a grievance, not a plan

When someone says they’re busy, it’s really more of a complaint than anything else. It’s a grievance on the state of the day, and not a plan of attack. It’s certainly not productive, and definitely not helpful. It also makes it seem like our customers are a huge inconvenience to us, and this is definitely not a good look.

Busy is relative

When we here at Agency Performance Partners go into an agency, we might hear in the first 15 minutes how busy it is. But when we call our retired mother, she also is going to tell us how busy she is. Because the word busy is relative, when it’s overused it can end up being a little bit like the boy who cried wolf. When you say you’re busy every single day, you become immune to it.

There’s a difference between busy and productive

Remember that there’s a big difference between busy and productive. Productive means you have a full day which will pass by quickly, and it’s really a good thing. When customers are calling your agency, it means that you’re doing your job.

Know when to really ask for help

If every single day is truly busy and you feel the pressure and upticks in work, then this might be a problem that you need to get to the root of. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness, especially when there’s a problem.

Simply saying you’re busy is not a solution to an underlying problem, and if you’re feeling inundated, you need to take steps to fix the root issue. But if you’re wondering what upsets your insurance manager, using the word busy nonstop is definitely on top of the list.
