Driving Employee Engagement: Becoming A Goal Driven Agency

Posted on May 10, 2021 by Kelly Donahue Piro

Goal-Driven Agency

All this week we’re diving deep into some ways you can improve employee engagement at your agency. Employees are the lifeblood of your agency, and especially with summer right around the corner, we want to keep our people focused on the agency goals.

Being goal-driven will have a trickle down effect on the agency, and on the business.”

Our first tip of the series to improve employee engagement is focus on being a goal-driven agency. While there are many ways you can go about doing this, here’s how we do it here at APP, with our team members.

1. We ask employees to set one quarterly goal

We break up our goals quarterly, and we ask employees to pick one professional or personal goal to focus on. It can be something big, but it can also be something very attainable and low-impact, such as going on one walk a week, depending on what their life and schedule allows for.

2. We create a budget to help our employees reach their goals

In order to incentivize being a goal-driven agency, we set aside a budget to help our employees reach their goals. It doesn’t mean funding their entire goal, but sometimes employees might just need a little boost to help accomplish their goal. Maybe they need new running shoes, and we can help them accomplish that, which then in turn leads them to reach their goal.

3. We do a weekly check in

During our team meetings, we do a weekly goal check in. That way we can celebrate wins, and encourage those who are struggling. Plus, this gives us unique insight into the lives of our employees, and helps us ultimately understand them better.

4. What do you do if employees hate goals?

What do you do if employees are extremely resistant to goals? This might be a red flag that there’s a cultural issue at the agency, and can help you address this. This could also be a good opportunity to identify if there’s friction at the agency, and can even allow you to identify if some team members maybe aren’t a great fit.

When we’re in the thick of work life for years, it can be difficult to be goal focused without guidance. You might be wondering why we celebrate personal as well as professional goals.  That’s because we feel that being goal-driven overall will have a trickle down effect on the agency, which will impact the business for the better.
