What Insurance Agents Can Learn From 75 HARD About Judgment

There are plenty of ways to learn lessons that can carry you far in business and in our personal lives. We’ve recently been doing a personal challenge that has taught us plenty of lessons, including incredible business lessons. It’s called the 75 Hard challenge.

“Get rid of all the judgment, understand that there’s plenty of people out there that either wear headsets or make renewal calls or close sell on every call, whatever it is that’s holding you back that you’re judging, and just say, “I’m gonna keep an open mind about it.” You may have to work pretty hard at it, but if you do, you might be surprised at how many things you’re judging that really do benefit you”

75 Hard is a mental toughness challenge, and for 75 days you:

  • Work out twice a day, including once outside, no matter the weather
  • Read 10 pages of a non-fiction book
  • Drink a gallon of water
  • Stick to a diet with no cheat meals

You might think to yourself. No rest day? No cheat day? Nope, none of that. 75 Hard is specific and stringent, and if you screw up even once, it’s back to the beginning.

How does this all relate to insurance? We’ve learned some pretty interesting lessons about judgement. Here’s what insurance agents can learn from 75 Hard about judgement.

We Judge Things Before We Try Them

Part of 75 Hard is also staying away from alcohol. When we were looking to try 75 Hard, our friends would say “Oh, I can’t give up drinking for 75 days.” And yes, we thought that would be tough as well. But here’s the thing: it actually turned out to be our favorite part. We feel clear, energized, and better in general.

When we go into agencies, we often see judgement on things. We can’t make renewal calls, we don’t want to wear a headset because we don’t like the way they feel. We sit there and judge things all day long, and assume we won’t like them, so we don’t want to give them a real try.

Here’s our question when this comes up: have you tried it for 30 days to get a clear picture? Getting through the discomfort we perceive is a big hurdle, but if we cast our judgement aside and give things a fair shake, we can come to some incredible conclusions.
