Insurance Agency Management Tips

In the workplace, employees tend to get promoted who have done a great job. While this can be a great step for someone’s career, it also means that insurance professionals are slipping into management positions, who have never managed a team before.

“In a leadership role you’re under a spotlight, whether you like it or not, and you’re setting the pace and the tone.”

To make sure you’re guiding your team to success, here are some insurance agency management tips which are simple to implement, and can make a huge difference.

  • Dress for success

Sure, you’ve heard it before, but we’re firm believers that your appearance does make a difference in how your team sees you. You don’t need to necessarily go over the top and wear a three-piece suit, and you can also wear a nice pair of jeans. Instead of hyper-fixating on individual clothing items, you should appear put together as a whole. You shouldn’t seem tired or haggard, and should be in compliance with company dress code.

  • Be on time

Your team is looking to you as a role model, and if you’re always late with a cup of coffee in hand, that’s a problem. As a leader, you need to find solutions, and build the rest of your schedule around your career. If it happens once in a while, of course that’s okay, but lateness should not be the norm.

  • Own every outcome

No matter what happens, you need to own the outcome for your team. That means even if your team is not succeeding, you need to embrace that, own it, and pivot to problem-solving mode. A repetitive problem is not a blame game, it’s simply something that needs to be worked on.

  • Be a brand ambassador

No matter where you are or who your audience is, you need to speak positively about your agency. You have to back leadership decisions even when you’re outside of the room. People are looking for commitment, so it’s important that you take the time to understand the “why” behind decisions, and keep an open mind.

The bottom line is that as a leader, you’re under a spotlight, whether you like it or not. You’re setting the pace and tone, and if you’re not feeling positive, your team is going to pick up on that. By following these insurance agency management tips, you’re helping lead your entire team to success.
