Insurance Agency Hiring Tip

Insurance Agency Hiring Tip

Our next strategy for recruiting is a technique that is often overlooked by agencies, and it’s important to approach it carefully because it does have pros and cons. One of our favorite insurance agency hiring tips is using your team’s network for referrals.

“If you’re in the hiring mode, your staff knows what it’s like to work there, knows who fits in your company culture, may know people from other agencies, putting a little incentive in place is not a bad idea.”

Here are the pros and cons, and why using your team’s network for referrals is an excellent insurance agency hiring tip.

Pros of using your team’s network for referrals

There are many benefits to using your team’s network to get referrals. Firstly, your staff already knows what it’s like to work at your agency, they understand your company culture, and they might already know people who would make a great fit. You can also use this as an option to incentivize by offering a bonus upon the actual hiring. We also like to offer a bonus even if the candidate isn’t hired, because you still have a new connection to a possible candidate down the line. Another big pro is training and onboarding. When someone has a friend at your agency, they’ll have an easier time going through the training process, and they’ll likely be accepted as part of the group rather quickly.

Cons of using your team’s network for referrals

The biggest downside to using your team’s network for referrals is if the hire doesn’t work out. That can make things difficult, especially if you’re hiring family members of an employee. If things take a turn, they may try to leave together. They can also form a bond that might be disarming to other team members.

While there are downsides to consider when looking to your team’s network for referrals, we don’t think they should stop you from using this insurance agency hiring tip. Instead, you should know what you’re walking into with your eyes wide open, and look for solutions, such as placing family members in different departments.
