4 Phrases You Shouldn’t Hear or Use in Your Agency: “I’m Busy”

Anyone who has ever worked in an independent insurance agency can attest to the fact that they have a lot of moving parts. That means that insurance agents have a lot going on. So, when we hear people throwing the word “busy” around, we can’t help but shiver. We are going to get into why it bothers us so and why you need to shift this very specific narrative.

“We all have so much going on that it’s scary. But that doesn’t mean that you can get away with using this word every time something doesn’t work out.”

Is Your Insurance Agency Busy or Productive?

Sometimes, when people express their feelings about this topic, they think that “being busy” is an accomplishment. When you ask them how they are doing, they wear the word like a badge of honor. The issue is that busy is not the same as productive.

When you are busy, you have a lot going on, but it’s not always meaningful or impactful, or even helpful.

When you are productive, you are probably all of those things.

Busy can Be an Excuse

We get it. You are busy. The problem is that every single person on planet Earth is, too. If you called up any retired person you know, right now, they would say that they are busy. It’s just how the cookies crumbles these days.

Everyone you know and everyone they know is incredibly busy. We all have so much going on that it’s scary. But that doesn’t mean that you can get away with using this word every time something doesn’t work out. And that is how we generally encounter this phrase. You didn’t prepare properly. You forgot that thing.

And as a result, you weren’t able to perform.

If You Are Too Busy…

The reason this bugs us is because of how it can hide issues. You might actually have too much going on. There might be a super high fever pitch that you sit at and it’s slowly draining you.

We all know those people who are always going, burning the candle at both ends, and that isn’t the way to do it.

You could be doing TOO much, and if you are, you need to slow down. Burnout happens quickly and takes years to resolve. Independent insurance agents can burn out, too.

Be Busy at The Moment

In a world where focus is spread so thin, it’s important to be there for what matters. We are not recommending that you start trying to do everything all at once to be more productive. Multitasking is not the move here.

Be busy at the moment. Take care of what is in front of you. Use the two-minute rule. Do anything, but don’t start labeling your life as “busy.” It’s not a good place to be.

Try to switch that language for yourself and all the licensed insurance agents around you.
