Time Management Tip #5: The Word “Busy”

It’s another week, which means another round of our insurance agency time management tips, and we’re focusing on a few things this week, like the word “busy,” notepads, payments, and over-remarketing. But today, let’s start with the word “busy,” and why we’re so against it.

“Busy is not a plan, it’s a complete grievance on the day. And it has some really negative side effects.“

In our eyes, “busy” is a four-letter swear word, because it really is a negative word. If we walk around saying “I’m busy,” that means we’re not saying “I’m productive,” “I’m killing it,” or “I’ve got a plan for today.” Busy is not a plan, it’s a grievance on the day, and it has some really negative side effects.

For example, we could be saying “I’m so busy, I have to shoot these videos in the Delta Sky Lounge.” Or, we could say “I’m so productive, I have 30 minutes and I’m going to make the most of them.”

The other thing about the word busy is that it’s like the common cold:  it’s contagious. Everyone will walk around saying how busy they are, and it’s also a defense mechanism. Whenever there’s a mistake, saying “Well I was busy,” or “I forgot because I was busy” isn’t an actual reason. We’ve all got a lot on our plates, it just means we weren’t organized.

Most of the time when we’re busy, we actually find out that we’re just not focusing on the right things. Busy is not a positive word, it’s a very negative word actually. So, we encourage you to change the word busy to the word productive.
