Insurance Busy Season – Are You Understaffed During the Summer?

Posted on August 24, 2021 by Alex Arellano

Insurance Busy Season

All this week we’re talking about the dreaded “summer hangover” or that time towards the end of the summer when everyone is feeling like they’re running on empty. Yesterday, we discussed how the summer months can be short-staffed, and how to manage it. Today, we’re discussing how the insurance busy season factors in.

“If you’re feeling the summer hangover, check your book of business. You might be surprised to find some of your most chaotic months are when you’re the shortest staffed. And that’s a problem that we have to address.”

What is the insurance busy season? Well, despite many agencies being short-staffed in the summer, these months also tend to be the busiest in many ways. Many agencies experience the highest amount of renewals and new business in the summertime. So how do you manage this insurance busy season, when the books are full but the staff are taking time off?

Have a plan and a process

There needs to be a clear plan in place for who is doing what, and there need to be processes in place to handle this intense workload. This might require utilizing your time management skills, and if this is something you struggle with, we actually offer a robust Time Management Program.

Work like a team

In order to get through the insurance busy season, everyone needs to work like a team. Just because it’s so-and-so’s client doesn’t mean  you can’t dive in and help. When everybody pitches in, the workload will be easier all around.

Have contingency plans

As we like to say, our accounts work differently during tax season than they do in August. Agencies need to start treating the summer months like a productive time, and scale and staff for that. This might include anything from having overtime to additional hours put in. Maybe this means your agency should look into virtual assistants, or should work on its time management strategies.

Insurance busy season isn’t a time to whine and complain about how busy it is, because that’s not going to get anyone anywhere. Instead, agencies needs to have a plan for their most productive renewal and new business time, so nothing slips through the cracks.
