In a hard market vs. soft market, you no longer have to battle rate increases, but you do face the side effect of premium decreases. This means with every renewal, your book decreases. Yikes! The headwind will be strong. 

How can you combat premium decreases?
  • Conduct renewal reviews to avoid addition premium leakage via remarkets
  • Use renewal reviews to improve coverage and cross sell
  • Work to remarket clients where you can improve the carrier and or commission situation

In a hard market, you will see extreme restrictions on underwriting guidelines. This throttled new business and renewal options. In addition, existing clients saw record non-renewals as carriers added restrictions. This is one big difference between a hard market vs. a soft market in insurance — you’ll see the markets open up. However, I don’t think you’ll see “wild west” conditions; the carriers will be more moderate in nature.

Still, just because you have a market for an insured doesn’t mean you should write it. We need to be efficient and effective, and writing anything you can get your hands on is a recipe for disaster.

Your agency needs standards to stick by so you don’t let new and rewritten business take over — some clients are a loss ratio issue waiting to happen. Make sure you have strong agency standards so you can best manage your time and resources.

Broad Coverage vs. Restricted Coverage

During the hard market, we saw coverage restrictions and, for many carriers, increases and changes in deductibles for clients. We can anticipate seeing more normal and natural coverage options for clients — and even new coverages that may develop.

During this time, it’s critical that you and your team fully embrace driving apps. They aren’t going away, and many carriers are focused on this as the next generation of auto insurance. While you may not be a personal fan, remember — it’s not your policy. If your client gets a quote elsewhere with the discount applied, you may lose a sale or renewal.

Now is the time to really dig into each coverage — what it does and how to present it. Your clients need to know their child’s Xbox can be hacked and that they have coverage. They also need to understand that all those Amazon and DoorDash delivery services can create liability. Now’s the time to match the coverage each client needs to their lifestyle. When people know better, they can do better.
