How to Change Your Staff’s Attitude With 1 Simple Thing (and it’s not more time off)

Posted on January 28, 2017 by Kelly Donahue Piro

As a business owner myself I know that a happy team leads to a productive workplace. What makes people tick is the curious part. In surveying 650 agents across America we have found that what we think motivates employees may not. So often I hear money or time off is what motivates your team (in particular your service teams). We find a completely different approach works best. Before we tell you the secret to success I have to give you one of my best tips. Stay away from time off as a motivator.

Now you maybe thinking “Kelly, what do you mean?! If my team likes time off so let’s use it.” No way. I never recommend time off. Now, hear me out. When you give someone time off in reward for doing the job the following happens:

Scheduling nightmare
In 99% of agencies I hear how busy people are, so time off won’t help solve that problem
Time off puts stress on the rest of the team
If you are growing you are going to need your team on board 100%
Too often we have team members that exceed their allotted time off as it is
So if time off and money isn’t the answer ,what is? Let me help you. First of all, it’s free and it’s also the hardest thing in the world to do. Work to give one sincere compliment per day to your team. Sincere means with details, care, and individual attention. All too often agency owners are dealing with the problems of the day and it can overshadow the team’s victories. Many of the daily wins are not easy to find unless you are directly on the floor with the crew. Be more in tune with the day to day operations, work to find the wins. You will see a change in your team quickly!
