How to Ask for Insurance Referrals: What to Say

Wondering how to ask for insurance agency referrals? That’s exactly what we’re tackling this week. Today, we’re up to our next strategy, which is straightforward, but can sometimes become complicated.

“So find your own voice on it, but don’t be shy. Be of service. Learn your agency’s referral program, and start asking because there’s no time like today.”

We’re going to walk you through exactly how to ask for insurance agency referrals, which there are a lot of misperceptions about. This can be a huge stumbling block, so we want to offer a few options here.

Make your referral program known

If you have a referral program, you should be sure to bring it up to your clients. Unfortunately, when we train agencies, we start by asking if anyone has referral programs. About 75% of people in agencies can’t recall what their referral program is. They know it exists, but they don’t know about the specifics.

We need to keep in mind that a human adult needs to hear the same thing 22 times to remember it. So leaders really need to beat that drum when it comes to referral programs. And if you’re a staff member, you need to take personal responsibility to learn about your referral program. It’s a benefit to your clients, an opportunity, and an incentive.

Once you’re well-versed in your referral program, you can bring it up to your client by simply saying “Hey, I don’t know if we’ve ever spoken about it, but we have a great referral program. Do you know anybody who needs help with their insurance?” And then make sure that the new client tells you that they were referred so your other client gets credit, plain and simple.

Stick with the nice people

Another way is that if you’re talking to those nice people we spoke about yesterday, you can say “Hey, we love working with people like you, do you know anybody that needs help with their insurance? Just have them give me a call.”

The last way we like to consider asking for referrals is by saying “Hey, I noticed you’ve been a client for a long time. I hope you’re happy with our services. Just to let you know, if you know anybody who has a question about insurance or is confused about rate, have them come my way.”

It’s important to keep in mind that with referrals, you’re being of service to somebody. And when we’re thinking about asking for referrals, we tend to overthink the situation and overcomplicate things. So find your own voice, and don’t be shy.
